Welcome to Sumter Humane Society

Dedicated to saving lives, the Sumter Humane Society was founded in 1984 to care for the orphan cats and dogs in Sumter County, GA as a result of abandonment, over population, and human neglect.

A 501(c)3 non-profit organization, the Sumter Humane Society makes an impact in the community. Many of the pets at the shelter receive vaccinations and medical care for the first time in their lives. Each year we transfer over 500 dogs and cats to rescue facilities all over the United States and over 200 go to new loving homes. By utilizing grants and other creative programming like the Spay/Neuter Assistance Program, over 200 community owned dogs and cats are sterilized. Governed by an all volunteer board of directors, and managed by a small paid staff and volunteers, the shelter is a beacon of light for the unloved and unwanted. The shelter receives only enough funding from the City of Americus and Sumter County to hold an animal five days. Basic medical care, vaccinations, testing, and all fees to save a cat or dog through rescue must be raised through tax deductible donations, grants, and endowments. The SHS receives no state, federal, or national humane organizations funding. Donations of money, pet products, and other supplies are welcome and needed.

The BISSELL Pet Foundation is a charitable 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with a mission to help reduce the number of animals in shelters and to support organizations dedicated to the humane care and treatment of animals through pet adoption, spay neuter programs, microchipping and foster care. Founded in 2011 by Cathy Bissell, the BISSELL Pet Foundation is supported by BISSELL and focuses the Company's efforts of promoting animal welfare by awarding grants and contributions to charities dedicated to saving the lives of our nation's homeless pets

Why you should Spay/Neuter

Spay/Neuter Excuses

We hear excuses every day on why people don't spay and neuter their animals. We want everyone to know that there is NO EXCUSE! If you plan on breeding your animal, you must have a breeder's license from the Georgia Department of Agriculture. We have a very affordable Low Cost Spay/Neuter Program. Please contact the shelter for details on how you would qualify. Our stipulations have changed, if you didn't previous qualify, you certainly may now! It isn't uncommon for Sumter Humane Society to receive 40+ kittens and 30+ puppies in one day. These numbers are astronomical, and they can be prevented! Please do your part!
