Donate a Bed
After moving into our new shelter, we soon realized that we did not have enough beds to go around. While we have received many as donations, many of our orphans do not have one. We use blankets and dog beds for them, but they are staying wet and continuously getting chewed to shreds. Please consider donating a Kauranda bed so one more of our "fur angels" can sleep in the comfort that they deserve.
If you would like to donate a bed so another dog can sleep in proper comfort order here.

Sumter Humane Society Receives GA Department of Agriculture Spay/Neuter Grant!

Americus GA, May 1, 2013:  The Sumter Humane Society is pleased to announce that they have received a $7,500 grant from the Department of Agriculture for the spay/neuter of cats and dogs in the 31709/31719 zip codes.  Anyone residing in this area is eligible to have their pets spayed or neutered at no charge.  These free surgeries will be done by Crawford’s Veterinary Hospital, Harper’s Animal Clinic, or Whispering Pines Animal Hospital.

Some studies have shown that one unaltered female cat has the potential to create over 10,000 cats in four years.  One unaltered male dog could contribute over 400 more dogs in the same amount of time (  Now local Americus residents can do their part to cut down on the epidemic of unwanted pets entering their humane society every year – over 2,000.

The Spay Americus program awards up to two free spay/neuters per household on a first come, first serve basis.  Clients will need to bring a photo ID, and utility, or phone bill to the shelter in order to apply for the free surgeries.  Appointments will be made with the veterinarian and the applicants will take their pet to the vet’s office on the scheduled appointment day.   The grant money only funds spay/neuter surgeries and will not cover rabies vaccinations, pain meds, parvo and distemper vaccinations, etc.

Please don’t litter!  Spay or neuter your pets now – free!  Stop out at the shelter today to apply.  Call 229-924-0268 for more information, or visit us at 108 Industrial Blvd, Americus GA  31719.

The SHS also offers dogs and cats for adoption and microchipping services.  You can also shop our retail shop stocked with high quality pet products.  Our hours are Noon – 5pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, Noon – 3pm on Wednesday and Noon – 4pm on Saturdays.

Spay/Neuter Excuses
We hear excuses every day on why people don't spay and neuter their animals. We want everyone to know that there is NO EXCUSE! If you plan on breeding your animal, you must have a breeder's license from the Georgia Department of Agriculture. We have a very affordable Low Cost Spay/Neuter Program. Please contact the shelter for details on how you would qualify. Our stipulations have changed, if you didn't previous qualify, you certainly may now! It isn't uncommon for Sumter Humane Society to receive 40+ kittens and 30+ puppies in one day. These numbers are astronomical, and they can be prevented!
Please do your part!

Donations are the life of any non-profit organization and the Sumter Humane Society is no exception.
